Our city’s health stations are open Monday to Friday 8–16. Always book an appointment with the nurse or the doctor in advance.
Your health station should provide you with a personal physician if you suffer from a chronic disease.
All residents of Turku are assigned a health station near their place of residence. If you wish, you may change the health station assigned to you. You are also free to make use of the Turku health centre services even if you do not live in Turku.
Municipal day care centres are open between 6am and 6 pm. If the child needs day care outside these hours, for example because of the parents' work or study schedule, this is called shift care.
If the child needs day care, in addition to weekdays, at evenings, nights and weekends, this is called around-the-clock care. Night care means that the child needs care on weekdays between 6 pm and 10 pm.
The needed hours for care must be filled in on the care hour form and handed in by 12am the previous monday.
At the clinic we safeguard your health, that of your unborn child and entire family. We also support you in preparing for the changes that childbirth will bring. You will see a public health nurse and a doctor during the pregnancy and, if you wish, participate in ultrasound examinations and prenatal screening. Spouses are welcome to appointments. Prenatal acknowledgment of paternity can also be done.
Mediation is an opportunity guaranteed by law to mediate and solve conflicts caused by criminal acts and conflicts. Mediation is a free service which provides both the offender and the victim an opportunity to meet confidentially through an impartial mediator in order to discuss constructively, to influence the resolution and to agree on possible damage compensation.
Mediation is possible only between persons who have expressed their consent and are able to understand the meaning of mediation and the solutions arrived at in the mediation process.
The Swedish language class offers an intensive immersion possibility for all students who are native speakers of Finnish, as the class teacher's mother tongue is Swedish, which he/she uses in teaching for all subjects and lessons 100% for the first two years. Pupils also learn to read and write in Swedish. The use of Finnish in teaching increases from third grade onwards from 30% up to 50% in the fifth and sixth grades. Finnish lessons and other subjects that require Finnish are taught by another teacher who speaks Finnish as his/her mother tongue.
Hospital at Home is specialized health care provided at the patient's familiar home with the patient's consent and to the degree the patient's condition and treatment methods allow. Hospital at Home care is appropriate for diabetics treated with insulin, patients with cancer, patients on intravenous antibiotics and erythrocyte transfusion and patients with cardiac insufficiency. Patients are referred for admission from the home municipality internal diseases hospitals, municipal health stations, the emergency services, the Turku University Hospitals or private doctors.
When it comes to foreign-language classes, the main focus is on achieving a comfortable level of using a foreign language in different situations, subjects and concepts. The language is not being taught per se; instead, the foreign language is used to learn a subject matter.
In foreign-language classes, the first two years emphasise understanding the language and building a foundation for foreign-language competence. Reading and writing skills are taught in the students' mother tongue (Finnish). The share of foreign-language instruction is approximately 50%.
The City of Turku maintains some sports and exercise halls where it is possible to do many kinds of sports and exercise. Some of the halls are open for both individual users as well as for groups. Some halls serve only sports and exercise clubs and their members.
The City of Turku maintains one skateboard hall and eight skateboarding places and skateparks.
The Social Ombudsman helps social welfare clients with matters related to maintenance grant, child welfare and services for
the elderly and disabled, for example. The responsibilities
of the Social Ombudsman include counselling on matters related to applying the Social Welfare Clients Act, helping with matters
related to reprimands according to the Clients Act and providing information on client rights.
The Russian foreign-language class is now known as the Finnish-Russian class. Finnish- as well as Russian-speaking students may enrol in this class at the same time.
Instruction is given mostly in Finnish, but Russian language and culture are emphasised in the curriculum.
In the Finnish-Russian class, reading and writing instruction is initially conducted in Finnish. Russian-language reading- and writing skills are taught from third grade on when formal Russian education begins.

City of Turku is renting and borrowing sports and leisure equipment. Fendari is borrowing equipment for outdoor use and others for sports.
In school health care, the growth and development of the pupil is followed in cooperation with the parents, teachers and Pupil Welfare staff. Every school has a nurse and a doctor.

NuortenTurku is an information and guidance service for those under the age of 29. You can get guidance and support from us in matters such as searching for a job or filling in various forms.
In NuortenTurku you can search for information by yourself or with help from an employee. During opening hours you can visit either with or without an appointment. You can also send your questions via email, Facebook, WhatsApp, or call us by phone.
Income support is intended to be temporary aid and is a last-resort benefit. In order to receive a last-resort benefit, a report about the applicant must be made which states that he/she is unable ta make a living through paid work, entrepreneurship or other income or assets.
The applicant must actively try to improve his/her living, for example, by trying to find a job, work try-outs at workplaces or apply for a placement at vocational schools.
The Impivaara Swimming Centre and the Petrelius Swimming Hall offer a wide range of opportunities for water exercise and working out in the gym. They also offer water aerobics classes and other types of organised sports. The swimming pools are closed during a part of summer, at which time it is possible to swim in the Kupittaa Outdoor Swimming Arena and the Samppalinna Outdoor Swimming Stadium.

In Turku, you can attend upper secondary school either in Finnish-speaking day upper secondary schools or in the Evening High School of Turku. Swedish-speaking upper secondary school education is offered by the school Katedralskolan i Åbo and English-speaking education by Turku International School.
In addition to these schools owned by the City of Turku, upper secondary school education is also offered by the Teacher Training School of Turku University and by Turku Steiner School.
One of the tasks of the Environmental Protection is the preparation of permits for soil management, hunting, motocross, and camping. In addition, the tasks include the management and upkeep of conservation areas and nature trails. Nature education is practised by organizing public excursions and through the lessons given at the Nature School located in Ruissalo.
Enrollment in a mathematics class is open to students who are interested in mathematics and wish to deepen and expand their mathematics skills. In general, mathematics classes adhere to the school's general mathematics curriculum, except that students will probe matters deeper and wider in any given situation.
Hunting clubs can apply for hunting licenses to the territories owned by the City from the Environmental Protection. The licenses are granted for terms of four years. The Urban Planning and Environmental Committee has decided that the hunting licenses are only granted to hunting clubs.
The Environmental Protection is responsible for the game management and hunting supervision in the territories owned by the City.
Music classes provide students with readiness and inspiration for taking a comprehensive interest in music. Instruction begins with singing and playing musical instruments. A student starting out in a music class will need enthusiasm for singing, an ear for music, and a sense of rhythm. Previous ability to play an instrument or studies in music theory are not required.
